Ten Proposals for a House for Habitat for Humanity    2008

2008
competition sponsored by Southeast Center for Contemporary Art, Winston Salem, NC

This proposal for a Habitat House offers ten preliminary proposals that are simple transformations of house #D4S-25H in the existing "Habitat for Humanity Planbook". Up to this point I have chosen only two to further develop. I’ve used these experimental proposals to break through our preconceptions based on the traditional early 20th century house design. What does a house look like and how it can better meet the needs of contemporary low income families? These designs are generated from the occupant’s use of and need for space, rather than on  exterior form. The current Habitat house designs consider cost and ease of construction. These proposals also consider how the design of space can choreograph the life of the family. A house design provides shelter, but architecture goes beyond to offer ways of living.
